Educational Service Unit #13’s SOAR (Sharing Opportunities, Achieving Results) Department works in conjunction with numerous area agencies to provide fun, educational, and inexpensive activities for the students of our area.

Five separate activities, under the leadership of SOAR staff, were scheduled for the months of September, October, and early November: Flowerfield Historical School-Banner County Historical Museum, Tools and Technology Through Time-Farm and Ranch Museum, Branch Out-Wildcat Hills Nature Center, and Water Education for Tomorrow-Trails West YMCA Camp.

Flowerfield Historical School provides an 1888 school day for fourth grade students. The program was once again, very well received.  Teachers Lois Herbel and June Lacy provided a learning experience for over 800 students over 44 days. We had the help more than 40 area teachers, volunteers and over 30 parents. Twenty-four separate elementary schools throughout the region participated.  Judy Leafdale of the Banner County Historical Museum and her staff provided guided tours of the museum for all participants.  Certainly, many ESU #13 personnel can count Flowerfield School as a memorable experience from their 4th grade education.

Tools and Technology Through Time, hosted by the Farm and Ranch Museum engaged nearly 600 students and 24 teachers from 16 schools during their two-day event.  While at the museum, fourth grade students were introduced to antique farm machinery and the simple machines that were a part of virtually all farm equipment in the first half of the 20th century!

Nearly 400 6th grade students and their teachers converged on the Wildcat Hills Nature Center. They learned about the importance of trees to the Nebraska Panhandle.  Students were introduced to firefighting techniques, identification of products that come from trees, SNAG trees (I’ll let you look this one up), et cetera.  ESU #13 worked in conjunction with the National Park Service, Pheasants Forever, North Platte Natural Resource District, Riverside Discovery Center, along with the Wildcat Hills Nature Center to provide an outdoor classroom for our students.
